About Tim

I'm a Christian, a husband, a worker (for the Australian Public Service), interested in photography, books, music, movies, good food and wine, coffee, and many other wonderful things in life. God has blessed me in many ways - with faith, a lovely wife, two children, great friends, Christian fellowship at Crossroads Christian Church and more widely, a caring family, and so many more things as well. All in all, being found in Christ and with all these great things, I can complain about nothing.

He knows when you’ve been bad or good…

I love the comic Calvin and Hobbes. I’ve been reading it for many years and for the last few years I’ve been getting it delivered via email to my Inbox each day (you can too – see here). Basically, they’re re-running all the strips on the web, albeit 11 years to a day behind the original series (so, today being 23 December 2003, you can read the 23 December 2002 strip on the website).

Over the last week there has been a series about Calvin really wanting more Christmas presents, but really worrying that Santa won’t bring him any because he hasn’t been good enough. While it’s quite amusing to see Calvin wrestle with his conscience, what struck me more is that to Calvin, Santa is like God. Or rather, Calvin?s perception of Santa is like the common perception of God. I?ve posted some of the relevant comics here so you can see what I mean (this will open in a new window): Click Here.

Passion

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/12/21/1071941607327.html

Saw this great article in the SMH today by Paul Sheehan: it centres on Mel Gibson’s upcoming film about the last 12 hours in the life of Christ, but really it’s about a shift in Christiantiy away from liberalism and, presumably, towards tradional or fundamental forms of faith.

This is not the kind of article that Paul Sheehan normally writes – he’s not the Herald’s religious affairs journalist, but he does write a lot about Australian culture. I found it very interesting that something like this is being picked up and observed, and making it to the front page of the website, by what is normally a liberal newspaper. I wonder what the ongoing significance of such observations will be.

Tiling, power tools and other such fun

Well, our weekend ended up begin a lot busier and more hard work than we were expecting.

Our story begins on Saturday morning. As part of our ongoing battle with the house to try and make it look as nice as possible, Tegan decided that we might put some new tiles in to our bathroom – just a couple of rows of nice, small, blue, glass tiles above the existing ones around the bath/shower. Little did we know…

Heckler follow-up

In a follow-up to my Dad’s Heckler article on the humour in local council’s declaring nuclear-free zones, a woman from Katoomba wrote a letter to the Herald today announcing that:

Signs have a Point

Frank Johnson (Heckler, November 24) condemns our “Keep Blue Mountains nuclear free” signs, but a little local knowledge is useful. Nuclear waste is regularly trucked through our council area on its way to inland dumps, a practice which will increase if the Federal Government gets its way.

We aren’t happy about radioactive heavy vehicles using the slippery, winding highway, though we can’t stop them. Our “gimmicky” signs are therefore our only way of registering our protest against this imposition, and we’re fond of them.

Naomi Parry, Katoomba, November 24.

While she may have a point, I think she missed the point. Besides which, how can Katoomba really declare itself to be a nulcear free zone when it has truckloads of nuclear waste carted through it on a regular basis?
