Third Star Wars Trilogy

Well, the rumour has hit that there may be a third Star Wars trilogy, i.e. episodes 7, 8 and 9. George Lucas has previously said ‘definitely no’ to the possibility of a third trilogy, partly because he thought he’d be too old.

However, according to the December 2003 issue of UK magazine HotDog:

“No wonder Peter “Chewbacca” Mayhew is smiling. Not only has he been rescued from obscurity and given the chance to reprise his role as our Wookiee comrade for Episode III, but his contract also stipulates that he’d be required to appear in Episodes 7, 8, and 9.
Yes folks, seems there are actual whispers at Lucasfilm that the ‘sequel’ trilogy might be in the works…”

Well, I guess it’s to be expected. George Lucas did such a good job of ruining our childhood memories of Star Wars with Episodes 1 and 2 that it’s not really a surprise that he’ll want to continue that trend (and maybe also screw up our expectations of what happened after Return of the Jedi).

Thank goodness that other people have done a good job of fleshing out the Star Wars universe, such as the Tales of the Jedi and other comics and the excellent variety of games.

Personally, what I’d like to see is someone coming along after Lucas has finished with the series, obtaining the license to make more movies, and doing a very good movie set, say, 40,000 years before the original Star Wars trilogy – back in the olden days of the Republic. Some of the comics (Tales of the Jedi) and one of the games (Knights of the Old Republic) have been set in that era, and they’re excellent.
